Overcoming Disabilities

Team Hoyt: A Father-Son Triumph

Team Hoyt, composed of Dick Hoyt and his son Rick , is a remarkable father-son duo from Holland, Massachusetts. Rick was born in 1962 with cerebral palsy, leaving him unable to speak or use his limbs. Despite being advised to institutionalise Rick, his parents had multiple hospital and specialist appointments, taught him to read and when they were able to fit him with a computer at age 11, he gained the ability to communicate directly.

Their journey into athletics began in 1977 when Rick expressed his desire to participate in a 5-mile benefit run. Despite not being a runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair. They finished second to last, but I imagine when Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” it ignited a passion that led them to complete over 1,130 races, including 72 marathons and six Ironman triathlons. Their dedication shows how overcoming disabilities is possible with determination and love.

This method, known as the “1% Better” method, became his mantra. Imagine what we could all do by improving by 1% each day. My room would be clean by 2053!

In November 2020, Chris made history by completing the Ironman Florida in 16 hours, 46 minutes, and 9 seconds. Chris’s story doesn’t end there. He went on to complete all six World Marathon Majors.
